More fun food

Blake and I made a homemade pizza tonight using a store-bought natural crust, a jar of Ragu pizza sauce, 2% mozzarella cheese, fresh diced tomatoes, fresh basil, minced garlic and 4% lean hamburger meat. It was yummy...

Blake's first baseball event

Tonight, we had a baseball clinic where we met the coach and they had each field setup to practice a different skill. This is Blake's first time playing baseball so we've been a bit nervous about how he'd do but he did great tonight. I think he'll be fine! (Side note: I was the only parent taking pictures and the only one watching my child in line to make sure he was doing what he was supposed to. He's generally well-behaved and many of the kids weren't so I'm thinking the work you put into it matches the outcome? Or maybe I'm just a helicopter parent.)

First up, practicing batting. These were just sticks and they practiced their stance and swing. I was a little worried how a group of kindergartners with sticks would do but there didn't seem to be any mishaps.

Next up, running practice.

Listening carefully to instructions...

And the last event, practicing throwing and catching (Blake's weakness - his partner said "are you a fraidy cat from the ball?")

Spreading apart before playing catch...

Big sister, always reading. This book is one I gave her yesterday at 4:00 and w/in 24 hours she's on page 120 and half-way through the book.

We finished up w/gathering with the team and talking about practice and game times and getting a chance to meet each other. Blake knows half of the people on the team already including one of his friends from school. This particular friend isn't very good at following instructions and doing what he's supposed to. Blake and I had to have a chat about being a good example for his friend and the fact that Blake can't follow what he's doing. We'll see how that works out.

First practice is Saturday at 2 - we'll see how it goes!

Blake's music program

Andy and I ordered the DVD of Blake's music program because our two video cameras both ran out of batteries during the program. We got the DVD today and I converted it so it could be embedded here. Blake's the upper row, all the way to the left.

btw, Blake looks very serious on the video but he loves music so much. He was really concentrating making sure he got it all right but this is his favorite part of school, hands down.

Blake's Field Day

I was Blake's Field Day adult partner. We completed a lot of events, the weather was perfect and we had a lot of fun. I worry about Blake sometimes because he's so shy when he's in public with us but at school, he's not and has lots of friends. I was also very happy that he used good manners, was patient waiting in line and behaved well. There were lots of examples of other kids not doing that but happy to say, Blake wasn't one of them.

When I got to the classroom but Blake didn't know I was there (everybody else noticed but not him)...

Lining up outside!

Baton "race" (there were no winners)...

Spoon race...

Sack race...

Tossing a fish with a towel (huh?)...

Horseshoes...

Basketball...

Soccer (he kicks with his left foot which I find interesting)...

Blake and Lexia (who he's had a crush on since last summer. She lives right by Bob and Nicki and we'd run into her at their neighborhood park occasionally.) Blake exclaimed "I'm so glad you were my partner in the music program!"

...mom and Payton make yummy food!

Grilled Cheese (inspired by this recipe) made with sourdough bread, Havarti and mozzarella cheeses, fresh tomato slices, fresh basil and honey. Cup of tomato soup, sliced strawberries on the side and ice water with lemon....perfect (and only about 9 points for everything)!

Riverfest 2008

Tonight, Andy and the kids met me at the running store right by my work where Andy and I got properly fitted running shoes (side note: I normally wear an 8 but the running shoe is a 9 1/2 - how does that work?). After that, we drove a few blocks to Riverfest. We spent about an hour eating and taking in the sights.

2 miles! omg!

Tonight I did another training run which was to run 2 miles straight. I've been dreading this run since I started because it just seemed so crazy that I, the lifelong asthmatic, non-runner would ever be able to run 2 miles. Tonight, I did it. Headwinds, lack of iPod and new running shoes didn't create a problem. I think my runs a few weeks ago were actually much harder and took me a long time to recover from. I'm not dreading any of the other runs during the training program because now I know I can really do it.

8 laps around the track was really boring though so I'm off to find a Garmin 405 Forerunner to make it easier to run wherever I want. Yippppeeee!

Mother's Day weekend

We just got back from a busy weekend that started with the kids and me and driving to KC on Friday after work/school. Andy stayed in Wichita to watch Bob and Mark run Saturday morning. They came in 270th and 271st on the 10k with times around 48 minutes. Results here.

Saturday morning, I took Payton over to my parents' house to help with their garage sale.

One area where stuff was setup...

After that, I did my scheduled run which went well. I was entertained by the two women who showed up to the track with a coffee mug in one hand, cigarette in the other and started walking the track and threw cigarette butts on the track. One of them took off jogging for a lap and then that was it.

Blake and I went to Dan and Katrina's house as they were having a garage sale as well and we were just going to visit. Turned out to be just Katrina and Isaac so we hung out w/them for awhile before heading out to run some errands. Evening was spent at my parents and then back to Andy's mom's waiting for him to arrive from Wichita.

Sunday morning, Payton and I got up early so we could head out to breakfast at First Watch w/my mom for Mother's Day. The kids had a gift bag for me that had a purple iPod Shuffle in it. I've been using Andy's shuffle when I run so this was a good idea. Now I can run to my favorite songs!

Breakfast at First Watch was good (even after the 40 minute wait) and then my mom dropped Payton and I off at the park for Alan's first birthday party. Most of Andy's family was already there when we got there.

The birthday boy...

Blake and Joey heading to the skate park...

I'm sure the skaters loved the munchkins running around their skating area...

Food time! Nobody wanted to sit in the gazebo because it was so chilly that everybody wanted to be in the sun to warm up.

One warmup spot to eat...

Cake time!

Sweet big sister...

After a quick stop by Andy's mom's house to pack up all of our stuff, we headed to Isaac's basketball game before leaving town.

#41

Isaac scored several points for his team, including some 3 pointers and...

they won. :)

We headed home after that and arrived around 8:30. Getting ready for our week now which includes the normal work/school but also Riverfest, Blake starting baseball practice, Blake's field day, Andy leaving town and more running for me.

Have a good week everybody!
